Fuzzy the Caterpillar (D6)
On our last day of camping, we found a really big White FUZZY caterpillar and showed the kids.
They were a little hesitant at first (Ezra’s not a fan of bugs) but after reminding them what happens to a caterpillar, they were very excited. Araya started carrying it around and said it was HER caterpillar and wanted to bring it home. I thought it would be okay, if we could keep it alive until we got home. I put it in a cup I had coffee in – earlier that day, I poured it out and rinsed it with water, added some leaves and put him in it. (Thinking to myself, I can take pictures of it, and hopefully it will make a cocoon for us soon, and the kids can watch it turn into a butterfly)
Well, when we got home, I thought I had killed it…it was DRENCHED in coffee water…and I thought it drowned, it was so wet. I put it in a mason jar anyways and went and found a little branch of leaves for it. I told David I would check on it, before showing the kids in the morning, so they didn’t freak if it had died. Though, in the morning, it looked like THIS:
Actually, it was more translucent. (I took this in the afternoon) It looked like it had a thick spider’s web all around it. Good news: I didn’t kill it! Bad New: I didn’t get a shot of it as a caterpillar!
Here’s my Day 6 Photo: You can kind of still see him through the cocoon.

This makes me think of my Great Grandfather. My grandfather made him a butterfly house out of wood--wood on three sides and one side was screen with a removable lid. They would put several caterpillars in and we would have so much fun watching them build cocoons and releasing the butterflies. I will have to do this with the girls next year! Thanks for the fun memory. :0)
